Red Blood Cells Have the Job of Carrying Oxygen Flashcards
1
Q
What do red blood cells do?
A
Transport oxygen from the lungs to all the cells in the body
2
Q
How does being small and having a bioconcave shape help red blood cells?
A
give a large surface area for absorbing and releasing oxygen
3
Q
How does containing haemoglobin help red blood cells?
A
contain lots of iron and give colour.
In the lungs it reacts with oxygen to become oxyhemoglobin.
In body tissues reverse reaction happens - release oxygen to the cells
4
Q
How does not having a nucleus help red blood cells?
A
frees up space for more haemoglobin, can carry more oxygen
