The Carbon Cycle Shows How Carbon is Recycled Flashcards
What is carbon an important element in?
The materials that living things are made from
There’s only a fixed amount of carbon in the world. What does this mean?
It’s constantly recycled
What is the whole carbon cycled powered by?
Photosynthesis
There’s only one arrow going?
Down
What do green plants use the carbon from CO2 in the air for?
To make carbohydrates, fats and proteins
What does eating do?
Passes the carbon compounds in the plant along to animals in a food chain or web
What does both plant and animals respiration while the organisms are alive do?
Releases CO2 back into the air
What eventually happens to plants and animals?
They die and decompose, or are killed and turned into useful products
What happens when plants and animals decompose?
They’re broken down by bacteria and fungi
What do these decomposers do?
Release CO2 back into the air by respiration, as they break down the material
What is done with some useful plants and animal products e.g wood?
They are burned (combustion). This releases CO2 back into the air
