The Respiration Rate of Yeast Depends on Its Conditions Flashcards
What can you do experiments to investigate?
How the rate of CO2 production by yeast changes under different conditions
1) what do you do first?
Mix together some sugar, yeast and distilled water, then add the mixture to a test tube
2) what do you do second?
Attach a bung with a tube leading to a second test tube of water
3) what do you do third?
Place the tube containing the yeast mixture In a water bath at a certain temperature
4) what do you do fourth?
Leave the tube to warm up then count how many bubbles are produced in a given period of time. Use this to calculate rate of CO2 production
5) what do you do fifth?
Repeat the experiment with the water baths set at different temps
6) what happens sixth?
Respiration is controlled by enzymes - so as temp increases, so should the rate of respiration
How could you alter the experiment to give more accurate results?
By replacing the second tube with a gas syringe - you’d measure the volume of gas produced instead
