Gametes are Produced by Meiosis Flashcards
What is Meiosis?
Another type of cell division
How is it different to miTosis?
It doesn’t produce identical cells
Where does meiosis only happen in humans?
In the reproductive organs
What does meiosis produce?
Four haploid cells whose chromosomes are NOT identical
What happens before the cell starts to divide?
It duplicates its DNA
One arm of each chromosome is…
An exact copy of the other arm
What happens in the first division of meiosis?
The chromosomes line up in pairs in the centre of the cell
First Division - What happens to the pairs?
They are pulled apart, so each new cell only has one copy of each chromosome
First Division - What do the father and mother’s chromosomes do?
Go into each new cell
First Division -What will each new cell have?
A mixture of the mothers and fathers chromosomes
First Division - What does mixing up the genes like this create?
Variation in offspring
What happens in the second division of Meiosis?
The chromosomes line up again in the centre of the cell
Second Division - What happens to the arms of the chromosomes?
They are pulled apart
You get four haploid gametes -
Each only have a single set of chromosomes. The gametes are all genetically different
