Plants Need to Respond to Stimuli too Flashcards
How do plants increase their chances of survival?
By responding to charges in their environment
What are 3 ways in which plants respond to changes in their environment?
- sense direction of light and grow towards it to maximise light absorption for photosynthesis
- sense gravity, so roots and shoots grow in right direction
- climbing plants have sense of touch, find things to climb and reach sunlight
What is the first way plants are more likely to survive?
If they respond to the presence of predators to avoid being eaten
What is an example of a plant responding to a predator?
White clover is a plant that can produce toxic substances to cattle.
What is the second way a plant is more likely to survive?
If they respond to abiotic stress - anything harmful that’s natural but non-living like a drought
What is an example of a plant responding to abiotic stress?
Carrots produce antifreeze proteins at low temps - protein bind to ice crystals and lowers temp that water freezes at, stopping more ice crystals from growing
