Mitosis Produces Genetically Identical Cells Flashcards
What is MiTosis?
When a cell reproduces itself by splitting to form two cells with identical sets of chromosomes
What happens when a diploid cell divides by miTosis?
You get 2 cells that are both diploid
What is the DNA like in a cell that’s not dividing?
It is all spread out in long strings
What happens if a cell gets a signal to divide?
It needs to duplicate its DNA - so there’s one copy for each cell
What kind of chromosomes do DNA form?
X-shaped - each ‘arm’ of the chromosomes is an exact duplicate of the other
What do the chromosomes do and what happens to them?
They line up at the centre of the cell and cell fibres pull them apart
What do the two arms of each chromosome do?
They go to opposite ends of the cell
What forms around each set of chromosomes? What do these become?
Membranes - they become the nuclei of the two new cells
What does the cytoplasm do?
Divide
What do you now have?
Two new cells containing exactly the same DNA
