What is checked during a full cab check

A

Enter the cab and check the safety equipment and fire extinguisher
Check the fault book
Check the MCB’s
Check all the safety light indicators/fault lights have gone out
Brake controller to full service
Master key in and the direction selector to neutral to open desk
TPWS & AWS self test, check audible and visual indicators on both systems
Check the GSMR displays GSMR-GB
Check the DRA is activated and displaying a red light
Check the air gauges to ensure enough air (use compressor speed up to build air up)
Safety system checks – Check brakes – check DSD and DVD – Check DRA
Check horn
Check train lights and tail-lights
Cab heater/AC
Shut desk down, master switch to off and remove driver key
Ensure DRA is IN/ON
Set lights
Secure Cab

What do you check on your external train check

A

Check for NOT TO BE MOVED boards attached to vehicle
Walk around the vehicle checking for below the sole bar:
Isolating cocks in correct poisons
Fuel levels
Oil levels
Water and coolant levels
Batteries not isolated
Brakes not isolated
Fire bottles are not over or under pressure/discharged
Sand Levels
No air leaks
No oil, water or fuel leaks
No cables or pipes detached or loose
Couplers not damaged
Electrical boxes on couplers are not retracted or damaged
Couplers bags on?
All external lights are working
No scotches under wheels
No shore supply or CET/Fuel pipes attached
Check same on other side

A

Brake stage test
Emergency brake test
DSD test
DRA test
Emergency plunger test

How do you test the DSD peddle and brake demand

A

Put train in forward
DRA off
Take step 1 brake
Take foot off DSD and get beeping warning, after 5-10 seconds the emergency brakes are initiated.
Check gauge to see brake demand
Replace foot to cancel brake demand and reset
Failure to reset will notify the signaller

How do you test the DRA

A

DRA should be on when you turn train on, set it to off
Put train in forward
Set stage one brake or hold in hill start if fitted
Take stage one power
Listen to the revs
Turn DRA on
Revs should drop to idle.
Put in full service braking
Put train in neutral
