Permissive Working Flashcards
What type of light signals you into a section for permissive working
Associated position light
What is permissive working
Signalling two or more trains in one block section, signal section or dead end platform at the same time
(Usually a platform)
How should you enter the occupied permissive working section
Proceed at caution, being able to stop short of any obstruction or train
What is the minimum distance you should leave between two trains when permissive working
2 meters (6 foot)
How do you know where to stop when permissive working on a platform
Look out for car stop markers relevant to your train type and length.
You may be directed by platform staff.
The sectional appendix may also show local instructions
What does a mid platform berth marker board look like
White rectangle with black line across the middle which has a gap in the middle
What are the risks if you don’t stop in the correct position on an occupied platform
Movement stopping short of correct stopping position
Rear of train not platformed
Having to set back
Other train unable to occupy platform
Collision with other trains
Injury to staff or passengers
Damage to rolling stock
If another train is signalled behind or in front of you on a platform, what are the risks
Not knowing which movement authority applies to you
Moving without authority
Not moving when authority is given
More than one train moving at the same time
Collision due to speed, slide or movement without authority
What are the risks of permissive working on bi-directional lines
Knowing how movement authority will be given to you
Only moving when clear understanding on how the movement with be authorised has been reached
Stopping your train if you are unsure or see conflicting movements
Stopping the train immediately if there’s a risk to any person
Travelling at a speed that allows you to stop in the distance you see to be safe and clear
If the signaller gives permission for the permissive working move what must you do when finished
Inform the signaller the move is completed
Once your train has come to a stop in a permissive working area you must not make any movements other then coupling or uncoupling unless
A signal is cleared for the movement
The movement is authorised by the signalling system
The movement is authorised by the signaller
When uncoupling how far are you allowed to set back
Maximum of 2 foot (600mm)
What must you do if you need to set back a distance greater then 2 foot
Get the signallers authority
If you are driving your train towards the rear of another train which is moving away during permissive working, you must
Proceed at caution
Keep you distance from the train in front to prevent collisions (trains don’t have brake lights)
Not pass a signal that has been cleared for the train in front until the signal had returned to danger and cleared again
What additional risks are there when permissive working at a terminal station with buffer stops
Will your train fit
Maximum speed (remember TPWS)
Is the platform occupied
Track gradient
Station platform distractions
Weather conditions
Driving policy may state specific speed onto buffers or occupied platforms
