Why may trains be stopped or detained at a signal
Build up of traffic
Waiting to be routed to another line
During shunting movements
Operational difficulties
How do you remind the signaller you are waiting at a signal
After 2 mins press the SG button on the GSMR
After pressing the SG button to remind the signaller you are waiting at a signal. If the signal doesn’t change what is your next action
If you get a “wait” message from the signaller, wait for an additional 5 mins and press SG again if no change.
Then SG every 5 mins in response to a “wait” message
If the GSMR isn’t working how do you contact the signaller when waiting at a signal
Use the SPT if available and safe to do so
If no GSMR or SPT how would you contact the signaller
Use a Lineside telephone if available or a mobile phone, guards or passengers.
Remember the PED policy, make sure the train is secure and key is out. Make any call outside the cab
If you had to use a mobile phone to contact the signaller where would you get the signal box numbers from

If you are sent a message to “contact the signaller” how would you do that
Press the 1-1 call button on the GSMR

If you have to use a telephone which isn’t at the signal your train is standing at, what must you do
Make sure you are speaking to the correct signaller
Make sure the signaller understands at which signal and on which line your train is standing
What does an SPT with a number on it mean
The number is the maximum number of minutes you should wait before contacting the signaller
What does a white diamond sign at a signal mean
Track circuits in operation
If there is no white diamond at a signal and visibility is less than 180m what must you do
Contact the signaller immediately
During fog or falling snow the signaller will not allow you to draw forward to a semaphore signal at danger unless
The train will stay within signallers view
Or
The signal is track circuited
If you’re stopped at a signal, you can’t get the signaller on GSMR and the SPT is of limited clearance with an X or yellow roundel on it what must you do
You must stay in your cab and wait until told by a competent person that the adjacent line has been blocked by the signaller and the telephone is safe to use
Could be a train on another line stopping to pass the message
If detained at an IBS signal and you have no GSMR you must
Use the SPT if safe to do so
If SPT has failed, try another SPT or Lineside phone
If unsuccessful and you’ve confirmed the signal box is closed you may pass the signal at danger following instructions in rule book module S5
You must stop at the next signal and contact the signaller even if the signal is displaying proceed
