18
Q

If the signaller informs you you’ve had a hot axle box detected what must you do

A

Stop train immediately.
Arrange for a line block if needed to inspect and confirm

19
Q

What is the “Not Hot” procedure for hot axle box

A

If it been over 10 mins since you were asked to examine and it’s not hot continue at 20mph
If it’s been under 10 mins, check with temple stick, if not hot continue as normal for 50 miles and check again.
No need to re-check if within that 50 miles you pass through another hot axle box detector without setting it off, or a fitter inspects and gives the all clear. If tripped by second hot axle detector on same axle you must go 20mph max to clear the line. You may be asked to do a wheel rotation test before moving

20
Q

What is the “Hot” procedure for hot axle box

A

Check axle with temple stick to confirm hot if not obvious.
Perform a wheel rotation test
If wheels turn get authority to move train off line at 10mph 5mph over points, move passengers out of that coach
If wheels don’t turn do not move train, report to signaller and control wait for a fitter with a wheel skate to move. Passengers will have to be moved to another train

21
Q

How do you perform a wheel rotation test

A

With vehicle at a stand.
Make a mark at the 6 o’clock position on the wheel that has been reported and on the wheels either side using chalk or ballast.
Move the vehicle forward 2-3 foot stop, see if the marks in all the wheels have moved round the same amount.
This will determine if the wheels are turning or not and your next course of action

22
Q

What is the set up and minimum requirement of train circuit actuators (TCA) to enter service

A

For a one or two car train there must be at least one working TCA
For a three or more car train you must have a working TCA on either of the front two or the rear two cars

A 3 car with the only working TCA on the rear most axle would be able to continue with authority

23
Q

Except for an automatic half barrier crossing AHBC provided with treadles, how must you approach any automatic level crossings and barrow or foot crossings with white light indications while travelling with defective TCA

A

Approach at caution and not pass over until sure it is safe to do so.
You must sound horn from point you start travelling at caution until the front of your train is on the crossing

24
Q

Can a train start a journey to a maintenance depot for repair if the EBS has been operated.

A

As long as you tell the signaller
Get permission to start the journey in that condition

If the train has more than one unit and is travelling on a line that’s not signalled by TCB or ERTMS a guard or competent person must be provided to travel in tear unit

25
Q

What are your actions if you have to operate EBS during a journey

A

Tell the signaller immediately
Not move the train until instructed to do so
Carry out instructions given
If train is more than one unit you must move all passengers into front unit, lock out rear unit
Guard must travel in rear unit

26
Q

Can you start a journey from somewhere other than a maintenance depot with Traction Interlock Switch TIS operated

A

A train is not allowed to start a journey carrying passengers with TIS operated

27
Q

If it becomes necessary to operate TIS you must only do this……

A

You’ve informed the signaller and maintenance
When train is at a stand
When you can’t get traction power
When you’ve checked that doors on both sides are securely closed

28
Q

What must you check before you move if you have TIS operated

A

That the doors on each side are securely closed

29
Q

If you have TIS operated what must you do at the end of your journey

A

Remember to reinstate TIS before shutting down the driving controls

30

If you’re told of GSMR network failure you must travel at 100mph max 60mph through affected area

34
Q

If the GSMR fails or become defective during the journey you must

A

Tell the signaller immediately
