When might you need Emergency Protection
Derailment
Collision involving trains
Collision with obstruction
Collision with road vehicle
Collision with person
Fire on train which might put passing trains in danger
Fire on train which mean passengers have to evacuate
Accidental diversion which obstructs a line
What must you do if your train is involved in an accident that obstructs the line
Place track circuit clips on obstructed lines
Contact the driver
See if the driver required assistance with emergency protection
If not remain with train to ensure passenger safety
What are your first actions if the driver is incapacitated
Press the red emergency button on the GSM-R
Switch on train hazard lights
Call signaller, If they confirm protection: place track circuit clips

What is a stranded train
A train that has stopped out of course, not at a station, where it is estimated that the train will be stationary for more than 30 minutes
What is controlled evacuation
Where circumstances require the evacuation of passengers and crew and its not time critical
Can be risk assessed, managed and resources mobilised to assist
What is uncontrolled evacuation
Passengers have made the decision to leave the train without the support of train crew
What are the evacuation methods
At station platform At disused platform By end on transfer By side to side transfer Onto and along the track From a train in a tunnel
In a train evacuation what does Use, Seek, Ensure, Check relate to
Use the public address system to update passengers
Seek the assistance of any competent person
Ensure passengers are advised of the position of safety
Check the train to ensure everyone is evacuated
What will happen in a controlled evacuation
The driver will
Ask signaller to block all affected lines
Place track circuit clips on each affected line
Carry out emergency protection procedure
Advise train guard
If driver is unavailable guard must follow above
What will happen in an uncontrolled evacuation
You must contact the driver immediately advising of the uncontrolled evacuation
Use the PA to warn passengers about the dangers of self evacuation
The driver will then
Contact the signaller to arrange protection
If necessary get the traction current switched off
When must report forms be completed
As soon as reasonably possible, but before shift end.
Its advisable to take notes to help form completion if possible
What actions must be taken in a controlled evacuation
Track circuit clips on all affected lines
Detonator (emergency) protection in place
Line blockages in place
Traction current isolated
Plan in place for evacuation
