Q

What are the rules for passenger trains travelling over hand operated points in the facing direction

A

No passenger train should travel over hand operated facing points without confirming the have been clamped and secured

18

Explain why, when and how we carry out running brake tests

A

Why = to test the brakes, get a feel for there operation and confirm they are working sufficiently

When = should be carried out before we get to our first stopping point
Before the first restrictive signal
Before a speed reduction

How = select a suitable brake position to see a noticeable drop in speed (10mph min) observe brake cylinders.
On the depot, do rbt as soon as safe to do so to feel brake retardation
During falling or unbroken snow, max speed is 100mph, reduce permissible speed by 10mph with minimum speed of 50mph
Perform RBT every 3-5 mins.

20
Q

What are the rules for braking under poor rail head adhesion

A

Brake earlier
Select a braking point suitable for conditions
If wheel slide, leave brakes in and let WSP operate
Resist temptation to release and reapply brakes

21
Q

What type of devices are covered by the EMR PED policy

A

A

All PEDs must be switched off and placed out of sight and reach of driver

Mobile phone may be used in emergency’s once train is at a stand and secured

26
Q

What is the PED policy for preparation / disposal and fault finding

A

Preparation and disposal

PEDs must be switched off

Mobile phone can be used during prep if you need to speak to EMCC for fault reporting or diagnosis

Fault finding

Alll PEDs must be switched off, a mobile phone may be used for fault finding when the train is stationary and secure
Mobile phone may be used to contact EMCC for fault finding when lineside only when in a position of safety

27
Q

While driving in thick fog you lose sight of the semaphore distant signal. What are your actions

A

Apply breaks and reduce speed. Adjust driving as if the next home signal is going to be on.
