tissues Flashcards
epithelial tissue
sheet of cells that covers a surface or lines a body cavity, very strong, forms body’s glands
endocrine
secrete substances directly into the blood stream
exocrine
ducts carry products onto epithelial body surfaces or into cavities
simple or stratified
number of cell layers
squamous, cuboidal, columnar
describes the shape of the cells
connective tissue
most abundant, loosely joined together
two main types of CT
loose & dense (regular or irregular)
specialized types of CT
cartilage, bone, blood
cartilage
functional properties include reinforcement & support, shape maintenance, ability to absorb compressive shock
bone
makes up skeletal framework of body, supports & protects by enclosing subdivisions of dorsal body cavity
blood
allows the transport of respiratory gases, defense cells, nutrients, wastes
nervous tissue
main component of nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerves)
nervous tissue cells
neurons, neuroglia (supporting cells)
neurons
highly specialized cells which generate and conduct impulses
neuroglia (supporting cells)
provide nutrition, insulation, and protection
muscle tissue (3 types)
skeletal, smooth, cardiac
skeletal muscle tissue
the major component of skeletal muscles that pull on different bones to generate movements under voluntary control
smooth muscle tissue
lining of the inside of the organs in our body (inner tube), involuntary control
cardiac muscle tissue
only occurs in the walls of the heart, involuntary control, forms our heart, strongest cells in the body
origin
less movable attachment (more proximal attachment of muscle to limb)
insertion
the more moveable attachment (more distal attachment to limb)
membrane
epithelium + connective tissue
membranous tissue
composite tissues cover and line surfaces outside and inside the body
3 types of membranes
cutaneous, mucous, serous
cutaneous
skin, dry membrane
mucous (mucosa)
line the internal surface of every hollow organ that opens to the outside of the body (respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive tracts)
serous (serosa)
type of slippery membrane that lines closed cavities inside the body (pleural, pericardial, peritoneal cavities)
