The Wrist Joint Flashcards
What are the articulating surfaces of the wrist joint?
Formed distally by the row of carpal bones and porximally by the distal end of the radius and the articular discs, the ulna does not articuate in the wrist joint as it articulates with the articular discs
What is the blood supply of the wrist joint?
Supplied by branches of the dorsal and palmar arches, which are derived from the ulnar and radial arteries
What is the nervous supply of the wrist joint?
Supplied by the anterior interosseous branch of the median nerve, the radial nerve, posterior interosseous branch and the ulnar nerve, deep and dorsal Braches
What are the four ligaments which are found in the wrist joint?
Palmar radiocarpal, dorsal radiocarpal, ulnar collateral, and radial collateral
What are some of the clinca features of a fracture of the scaphoid?
Occurs by falling on a outstretched hand, is more common in young people and as the wrist has a distal to proximal blood supply can result in avascular necrosis
What are some of the clinical features of anterior dislocation of the lunate?
Can occur by falling on a dorsiflexed wrist and the lunate is forced anterior and this compressed the carpal tunnel, which can cause Parasthensia of the medial nerve and weakness of the thenar muscles, and the lunate can undergo avascular necrosis
What are the clinical features of a colles fracture?
Radius is fractured with the fragment being displaced anteriorly, and ulnar styloid process is avulsed in the majority of cases, and it presents as a dinner fork deformity.
