The Ankle and the subtalar joint Flashcards
What is the ankle joint?
Is a hinge joint where dorsiflexion and plantarflexion are possibe.
Describe the articulating surfaces of the ankle joint?
Tibia and fibula are bound together with very strong ligaments, which produce a socket known as a mortises where the talus articulates, and it fits snugly into this socket called the mortise
What is the ligament found on the medial malleous?
The medial or detoid ligament, which consists of four ligaments that fan out from the deltoid, attaching to the calcaneus and navicular bones, which acts to prevent overeversion.
What are the liaments found at the lateral epicondyle?
They all resist over inversion of the foor, and you have the anterior talfibular ligament, the posterioreofibular and the calcenofibular.
What is an ankle sprain a result of?
Partial and complete tears in the ligaments of the foot, the lateral ligament is weaker thna the medial and the lateral resits inversion, and therefore this is at most risk of irreversible damage
What is a potts fracture dislocation?
Used to describe a bimalleor (medial and lateral malleous) or a tirmalleor fracture, and the force eversion pulls on the medial ligaments, producing a avulsion fracture of the medial malleous, and the tibia is forced anteriorly sherairn off the distal and posterior part against the talus.
What are the articualting surfaces of the subtalar joint?
Posterior talar articulating surface and the posterior calcneal articulating surface
What contributes to the stability of the subtalar joint?
The posterior talcalcenal ligament, the medial talocaleneal ligmaent and the lateral talocalenalar ligament
What does the subtalar joint do?
Generates eversion and inversion
How can you get a calcneal fracture?
Often fractured in a crush type injury, eg falling on the heel from a height, known as a communicated fracture
