The Hip Joint Flashcards
What is the hip joint?
A ball and socket type synovial joint.
What are the ligmanents in the hip joint?
The only extracpaulsar ligament is the ligament of the head of femur, and the only extracpaulsar ligaments are the iliofemoral, pubofemoral and ischofemoral.
What are the vascular structures that are involved in the hip joint?
The medial circumflex humeral artery is the major blood supplier, and there is also the lateral circumflex humeral arteries
Name some of the stabilising factors of the hip joint?
The acteabulum, the cteabular labrum, the illiofemoral, pubofemoral and ischofemoral ligaments, and these ligaments are strongest anteriorly, and the strength of the muscles is greater posteriorly
What are some of the features of a fracture of the head of femur?
The limb is laterally rotated, arteries arising from the medial circumflex artery are usually torn, and this can cause avascular necorsis of the femoral head
What are some of the features of congential dislocation of the hip joint?
Are more common in girls, common symptoms include inability to adduct the hip joint, the affected limb is shorter and there is also the trendleberg sign
What are some of the features of a acquired dislocation of the hip?
Usually only occur after a traumatic accident, posterior dislocations are most common as the ligaments are weaker in these areas, the affected limb is shortened and medially rotated, and the sciatic nerve can be damaged in this injury
