Q

What are the stabilising factors found in the elbow joint?

A

Strong fibrous capsule, the radial collateral ligament on the radial side and the ulnar collateral ligament originating from the medial epicondyle and attaches to the cornoid process of the olecranon of the ulna.

Q

Which are the clinically important bursae that are found in the elbow?

A

Intratendonsus, which is formed within the tendon of the biceps brachii, and the subtendionsus, found between the olecranon and the tendon of the triceps brachii, which reduces friction between the two surfaces, and subcutaneous, found between the olecrannon and the overlying connective tissue.

Q

What are the two forms of bursitis which you see in the elbow joint?

A

Subcutaneous bursitis, as reapeated friction and pressure eon the bursa can cause it to become infalmmed, and it can also become infected. You can also see a subtendionsus bursisbursistis, which is caused by repeated flexion and extension of the forearm, and is commonly seen in assembly line workers.

Q

What are the two forms of epicondylitis and what are the common features?

A

Most of the flexor and extensor muscles have a common tendonsus origin, with the flexors from the medial epicondyle, and the extensors from the lateral, and therefore sports people can develop an overuse strain of these areas, which results in pain ianf inflammation in the area around the tendon.

Q

What are some of the features of a supraepicondylar fracture?

A

Occurs by falling on a flexed elbow, can be described as a transverse fracture spanning between the two epicondyles. It can damage the blood supply via the brachial artery and can cause a volkmanns Ischaemic contracture.
