The Structure Of The Eye Flashcards
What is the purpose of the eyelid
It clean and protects the eye. It i a fold of skin which covers the eye
What is the purpose of the cornea
It protects the eye; helping converge light rays that enter the eye. It is the the transparent covering the eye
What is the purpose of the sclera
Provides protection and support to the eye. It is the white part of the eye made from tough collagen fibres
What is the purpose of the retina
It detects light rays that are focused by cornea and lens. A layer of light sensitive cells at the back of the eye
What is the purpose of the choroid
Nourishes the eye and absorbs light. It is a layer of blood vessels with a black pigment
What is the purpose of the iris
Controls the amount of light entering the eye. It’s a ring of muscles around the pupil, coloured which provides eye colour
The purpose of the pupil
Allows light to enter the eye. It is the Hole in the middle of the iris
Purpose of the lens
Focus is the light on to the retina and focusing on objects. It is transparent, flexible and can change shape due to the ciliary muscles
Purpose of the ciliary body
Produces aqueous humour and helping with focusing by altering the shape of the lens. It is attached to the underside of the lens
What Is the purpose of the vitreous humour
Gives eyeballs it shape. Located behind the lens
What is the purpose of the Aqueous humour
Helps keep the eyes rounded shape; providing nutrients to the cornea and lens. It is found behind the cornea
What is the purpose of the lateral rectus muscles
They help orientate the pupil away from the centre of the body. Found on the lateral side of the eye
What is the purpose of the medial rectus muscle
Helps orientate the pupil towards the center of the body. Found on the medial side of the eye
Is the purpose of the fovea
Helps give sharp central vision; light is focused on to the spot by the lens. Located in a macular which has a high density of cone cells
Is the purpose of the optic disc
Where the optic nerve leaves the eye. It is found in the blindspot where there are no photoreceptors
