Cell Transport Flashcards
What are the two types of cell transport ?
Active transport and cell transport.
Active transport methods ?
Endocytosis, exocytosis and pinocytosis, phagocytosis.
Passive transport methods ?
Osmosis and diffusion.
What are living cells, plant and animals surrounded by and what does it do ?
They are surrounded by a semi-permeable membrane (plasma) which regulates the flow of liquids and dissolved solids and gases in and out of te cell.
What is simple diffusion ?
A passive movement of substances (no energy) from a higher concentration to a lower concentration.
What is the difference between concentrations known as ?
A concentration gradient.
Example: during gas exchange in the alveoli, oxygen moves from being at a higher concentration in the air to a lower concentration in the blood.
What is osmosis ?
A form of diffusion that involves the movement of solvent molecules (usually water).
What is it called when two concentrations are the same ?
It is called isotonic.
What is facilitated diffusion ?
It involves movement which are larger or charged. These molecules can only move into or out of the cell with the help of membrane protein, down a concentration gradient.
State one method of transport that allows oxygen to move in and out of cells.
Diffusion.
