Functions Of The Skeleton Flashcards
What are the five main functions of the skeleton
Support, protection, movement, blood production, storage of minerals.
What is the axial skeleton?
The bones that make up the head and trunk of the body
What is the appendicular skeleton?
It consists of the bones of the upper and lower limbs ( they are called appendage bones )
What are the five different sections of the veterbral column?
Cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, caudal.
Skeletons support definition?
Supports softer tissue and provides points of attatchment for most skeletal muscles.
Protection definition for the skeleton?
It reduces the risk of injury by providing mechanical protection for the body’s organs.
Movement definition for skeleton?
Muscles are attached to bones and when they contract the bones move.
Blood production definition for the skeleton.
Red blood cells carry oxygen and white blood cells protect the body against infection, are produced in the bone marrow of some bones.
Storage of minerals definition for the skeleton.
Bones store minerals including phosphorus and calcium which are released into the blood when required
What are all the bones in a four legged mammal?
Maxilla, skull, cranium, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, caudal vertebrae, lower maxillary, scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, carpus, metacarpus, phalange, rib cage, femur, fibula, tibia, tarsus, metatarsus.
