Specialised Digestive Systems Flashcards
What are hind gut fermenters ?
A digestive process seen in mono-gastric herbivores
Where do hindgut fermenters digest most of there food?
In there cecum and at the start of there large intestine.
What four parts are there to a ruminant stomach ?
Rumen, omasum, abomasum and reticulum
What is the function of the rumen ?
Fermentation occurs where microbes secrete enzymes such as cellulase to breakdown cellulose.
What i peristalsis?
It is where feed is brough back up to allow for it to mechanically be Brocken down by chewing and then swallowed for further digestion.
The function of the reticulum?
Filters food in the rumen, allowing only parts which are sufficiently broken down to move on to the omasum.
The function of the omasum ?
One water and salts are absorbed, then the remaining matter is passed through to the abomasum
Functions in the abomasum
( the true stomach ) digestive enzyme and acid are added.
