Structure And Function Of Blood Flashcards
The function of blood
Blood transports materials and heat around the body, and helps to protect against disease
What is the function of red blood cells
They deliver oxygen around the body whilst also carrying back the waste gases of CO2. They contain a protein called haemoglobin
Is the structure of red blood cells
They have a biconcave shape to maximise the surface area for oxygen absorption they are also small and flexible so they can fit through narrow blood vessels
What is the function of white blood cells
They defend the body against disease.Consist of B lymphocytes responsible for making antibodies, and t lymphocytes which initiate the immune response
Is the structure of white blood cells
Very structures of white blood cells including granular cytoplasm a large nucleus and loads nucleus
Function of platelets
Make up the rest of the blood. The cells help your body repair by stopping bleeding after illness or injury
Structure of platelets
Fragments of cells with protein attach to the surface; these allow them to stick together during clotting
Function of plasma
It’s a clear liquid a part of the blood is involved with the material transport such as hormones, CO2 and waste. Plasma makes up just over half of the volume of blood (55%).
Structure of plasma
Clear, pale/coloured liquid which makes of the fluid component of the blood
