What is locomotion ?
Locomotion is an animals movement that aids their survival.
Types of movement (locomotion)?
Climbing, swimming, hopping, leaping, gliding, running, powered flight.
What are adaptations for climbing ?
Longer limbs, prehensile tail, keratinised nails.
What are adaptations for swimming ?
Caudal vertebrae to give a long tail for propulsion.
What are adaptations for powered flight ?
Long bones, lightweight bones with a honeycomb structure, lighter beaks than mandible, feathers for flight, waterproof feathers for diving.
What are adaptations for running ?
Long limbs, lightweight skeletons, flexible spines or absence bones, tiny hairs on feet to add grips.
What are adaptations for gliding ?
Lightweight skeleton, tails, cartilaginous wrists.
What are adaptations for hopping/leaping ?
Strong muscles, elastic tendons, powerful rear limbs.
