Q

Difference between horns and antlers?

A

Hollow horns are made from a cone of keratin which surrounds a mass of bone. ( rhino horns are different because they are made from keratinised cells without core of bone. Antlers are bone , young antlers have velvety skin which gets rubbed off then the bone turns into a compact bone tissue as they mature.

Q

Arctic foxes have adapted to survive in cold climates, explain the role of the skin and its appendages in maintaining the foxs internal body temperature?

A

The fat in the subcutaneous layer will provide insulation while the dermis contains blood vessels which can construct to reduce blood flow to the surface of the skin, this reducing heat loss. The fox will also have a thick undercoat which will provide in further insulation.
