Role of hormones
A
Progesterone muscles decrease allowing other hormones to effect the uterine muscles. Oestrogen and oxytocin levels rise leading uterine to contractions and cervical softening. Relaxin, secreted by ovaries, relaxes the pelvic ligaments and opens the birth canal. Oestrogen and progesterone levels drop allowing prolactin to be secreted, triggering lactation
