Reproductive Hormones Flashcards
Name of production of sperm
Spermatogenesis
What is a male gamete called
Sperm
What is a female gamete called
Ovum
What is the production of ovum called
Oogenesis
What does LH stand for
Lutenising hormone
What does FSH stand for
Follicle stimulating hormone
What is the function of spermatogenesis
LH stimulates testosterone to be produced, causes production of sperm, inhibit is produced .
What is the function of oogenesis
FSH stimulates one or more follicle to mature, LH stimulates mature follicle to produce more oestrogen
What is the gonadotrophin hormone
Stimulates the pineal gland which reduces melatonin secretion this allowing GnRH to be secreted allowing the production of LH and FSH
Function of oestrogen
A hormone that builds the uterine lining after mensuration. Stimulates the release of LH by the pituitary
Function of progesterone
Maintains the lining of the uterus ready for fertilisation, it is mostly produced by the corpus luteum
Function of testosterone
Produced by the testes, enables the development of sex organ tissue and secondary sex characteristics
Function of the androgen binding hormone
Produced by seminiferous tubules, this helps maintain a high concentration of testosterone in the testes
Function of prostaglandis
Helps with uterine contractions, these are produced by most cells
Functions of oxytocin
Produced by the hypothalamus and released by the pituitary gland
