What is the position of the ovarian artery?
aorta caudal to renal artery- supplies ovary, uterine tube and uterine horn
What is the position of the uterine artery?
connection with ovarian artery- supplies caudal part of tract- large artery running along cervix side
What is the position of the ovaries?
one lie either side of dorsal abdomen, caudal behind kidney
What is the function of the ovaries?
produces ova/eggs ready for fertilisation
acts as an endocrine gland, secretes hormones oestrogen/ progesterone
How are the ovaries held close to the kidneys?
a suspensory ligament, held by part of visceral peritoneum- mesovarium
What is formed from the mesovarium which covers the ovary?
ovarian bursa- makes a pocket
a small opening to uterine tube- allows eggs to leave
What are the features of ovaries?
made up of connective tissue, smooth muscle and blood capillaries
each ovary has large number of ova- developing follicles
appears nodular when ageing progresses
Define Oogenesis, what happens?
production of female sex cells (ova)
- occurs in ovarian follicles
female mixed number of primary oocytes soon after birth
oogenesis produces small numbers of ova over time
What do primary follicles develop into?
Graafian follicles- oestrogen secreted
each consists of ovum formed by meiosis- cell division
Define multiparous species
produce litters, many follicles divided between both ovaries
How many mammary glands does a DOGS have?
5 pairs
How many mammary glands does a CATS have?
4 pairs
