Comparative Digestion.1 Flashcards
What two structures of the small intestine open into the duodenum?
pancreatic and bile duct
What is the location and function of Brunner’s glands?
duodenum, secrete mixture of digestive enzymes- succus entericus
What is the small intestine known for?
enzymatic digestion and absorption- food mixed with digestive juices (peristalsis)
What 3 parts make up the small intestine? DJ Ileum
duodenum, jejunum and Illem
What are the features of the Villi?
epithelial layer, increase surface area- maximise digestive/absorption efficiency
What is the main site of absorption?
Jejunum
What is the Brush Border?
extended from villi- microvilli
What crosses the gut wall via lacteals?
fat/lipid molecules- hydrophobic (cannot be absorbed)
What is each villus made of?
large capillary/ capillary network- conveys molecules through lymphatic system
Where is Chyle carried?
lacteals- milky fluid from digestion
Hydrophilic-
absorbs fat
What is the Mesojejunum and Mesoileum?
long tube- no fixed position, suspended by the mesentery
What are the stem cells within the small intestine walls called?
Crypts of Lieberkuhn- produces enterocytes
Where does the ileum end?
Ileocaecal Junction
What enzymes are produced by the crypts of lieberkuhn?
maltase, sucrase, lactase, enterokinase, amniopeptidase, lipase
What are amino acids and simple sugars absorbed by?
blood capillaries
What is the function of the pancreas?
secretes enzymes and bicarbonate into duodenum
What can the pancreas be described as?
extrinsic gland- outside digestive system
mixed, produces hormomes and pancreatic enzymes
What are the pancreatic enzymes?
bicarbonate, proteases, lipase, amylase
What are triglcerides broken down by?
lipase
