Digestive System.4 Flashcards
What are the functions of the stomach?
collect/ hold food
mechanical breakdown- rhythmic churning
start chemical/ enzymatic breakdown
protein digestion
What are some structural features of the stomach?
c-shaped sac
left cranial abdomen
Cardiac sphincter-
enters food, from oesophagus
Pyloric sphincter-
gains food from oesophagus- into duodenum of SI
Inner curve of stomach-
lesser curvature
Outer curve of stomach-
greater curvature
What artery does the stomach receive blood supply from?
coeliac artery- branch from aorta to portal vein
Peritoneal around the stomach-
omentum
Peritoneal around the intestines-
mesentery
What are the 3 stomach regions?
cardia
fundus
pylorus
What are the stomach walls lined with?
gastric mucosa- rugae/ large folds- flatten when stomach fills
What are the 3 cells within the gastric pits?
goblet- all
chief- body
parietal- body
Goblet Cells-
mucous lubricates food- protects stomach wall from digestive enzymes
Chief Cells-
secretes pepsinogen- inactivated pepsin- breaks down to peptides
Parietal Cells-
secretes hydrochloric acid- creates pH activates pepsin
What does the distention of the stomach stimulate?
gastrin release from gastric wall- stimulates secretion of gastric juices
Chyme-
stomach fluid
Chyle-
lymphatic fluid
What are the layers of the stomach?
serosa
smooth muscle- longitudinal, circular, oblique
submucosa
mucosa
