Parturition.2 Flashcards
What is a common complication of parturition?
Dystocia- difficulty giving birth caused by maternal and foetal factors
Q- rare
B- uncommon but happens in brachyesphallic breeds
What are the causes of foetal dystocia?
Foetal size
Foetal presentation- (position)
How does hypocalcaemic causes affect calcium gluconate IV administration?
slows IV administration of calcium gluconate- check HR (ECG)- can cause arrythmias
What are the factors of secondary uterine intertia?
cessation of uterine contractions once started
follows obstructive dystocia
can be relieved with oxytocin/ calcium- suitable treatments
What are the factors of obstruction of the birth canal?
result of abnormalities of birth canal- skeletal or soft tissue deformities
What are the causes of foetal dystocia?
breed conformation
foetus oversized- small litter develops larger foetus
abnormalities- anasarca, oedema causing diffuse swelling
What is the suitable position of foetal alignment?
the dive position
What are some investigation examples of dystocia?
abdominal palpation, radiography, vaginal exam (fergusons)- oxytocin- strengthens contractions
What are the clinical signs of dystocia?
hypothermia, low blood calcium levels- links to muscle function and contraction of myometrium
