Eye.3 Flashcards
What is the Pupillary Light Response (PLR)?
light detected onto pupil, see if contracts- used to detect neuro disorders
What is the structure and function of the Lens?
behind iris and pupil, held by suspensory ligament
focuses light on retina
What occurs when ciliary muscles contract?
altering shape of lens- where image focused on retina
What is a clinical condition which is common for developing cataracts?
diabetes mellitus- lens becomes opaque, stops passage of light. blindness
What is the structure and function of the Retina?
contains photoreceptor cells, information transmitted to brian- via optic nerve
What are the two types of photoreceptor cells?
Rods- black and white (low level)
Cones- coloured light
What structure supplies photoreceptor cells?
retinal artery, has 2 layers
What are the 2 layers of the retinal artery?
Macula
Fovea
Define Macula
centre portion of retina, produces sharper vision (rods and cones)
Define Fovea
pit inside macula, vision at sharpest
(just cones)
What are the Ganglion Cells?
axon travels across retina surface- towards optic disc, together forms optic nerve
NO RODS OR CONES- blind spot
What are Bipolar Neurons?
transmit to next layer
What is the function of the pigmented layer?
prevent light leaking out of the eye
