Digestive System.1 Flashcards
What are the stages of Digestion?
ingestion
digestion
absorption
metabolism
excretion
Ingestion-
taking food in the body through the mouth
Digestion-
breaking down food into small chemical units, stomach and small intestines
Absorption-
chemical units passed into the blood, carried to the liver- small intestine
Metabolism-
where chemical units converted into energy
Excretion-
removal of any remaining indigestible material
What are the features of a dog and cats digestive system?
carnivores, monogastric- short tract, easy to digest
What does a dog and cats digestive system consist of?
-Oral cavity (mouth, lips, teeth and tongue)
Pharynx
Oesophagus
Stomach
Small intestine (duodenum, jejunum and ileum)
Large intestine (caecum, colon, rectum and anus)

Pancreas
Gall bladder
Liver
What does the oral cavity hold?
tongue. teeth and salivary glands
What are the two regions separating the oral cavity?
Buccal, Central
Buccal Cavity-
inside of cheek
Central Cavity-
hard palate dorsally, tongue ventral- teeth lateral
What are the 3 functions of the oral cavity?
Prehension- lips/ tongue
Mastication- chewing
Lubrication- saliva
What part of the Oral Cavity does the Incisive Bone/ Maxilla form?
upper jaw
What part of the Oral Cavity does the Palatine form?
roof of mouth- hard palate
What part of the Oral Cavity does the Mandible form?
bottom jaw, joined at mandibular symphysis
What does the mandibles articulate with?
temporal bones, forming the temporomandibular joint
Mandibular Symphysis-
common fracture site in cats
What muscles form the OPEN mechanism of the temporomandibular joint?
masseter- mastication
temporalis
What muscles form the CLOSING mechanism of the temporomandibular joint?
pterygoids- lateral mandible movements
diagstricus
Prehension-
picks up food with lips and tongue
