from 4 weeks, hormone released from the placenta
When is the best day for a clinical examination?
Day 45
What is a form of pregnancy diagnosis?
Auscultation, detects foetal heartbeats in latter stages- HR’s less than 150bpm can indicate foetal distress
ELSA kits
What are the reasons for parturition?
release of foetal glucortiocoids (steroids in adrenal)
stimulates release of PGF2alpha from placenta
inititates corpus luteum regression- leads to decline in progesterone- initiates labour
What happens in the first stage of parturition?
initial weak contractions against cervix, cervix starts to dilate from relaxin
lasts 1-12hrs
B- restlessness, stressed
Q- seeks seclusion
What happens in the second stage of parturition?
foetal birth,
entering pelvic cavity- Ferguson reflex- triggering oxytocin hormone- triggering contractions
Oxytocin- strengthens uterine contractions- propulsion of foetus through cervix into vagina
chorioallantois membrane ruptured, ‘waters break’
10-30mins
aminon membrane surrounds foetus, CANNOT EAT PLACENTA
check puppies after birth for health/ wellbeing features
What happens in the third stage of parturition?
passage of allantochorion and placenta (after birth)
discharge from marginal haemotoma occurs- declines within a week
