Comparative Digestion.2 Flashcards
What is bile produced by?
liver- stored in gall bladder
What does bile do to fat?
emulsifies fat, ready for digestion
Where is bile secreted?
duodenum via bile duct
What pH is bile?
alkaline- neutralises stomach acid (hydrochloric)
What is bile made out of?
bile salts/ bilirubin- produced by RBC breakdown
What are the features of the Large Intestine?
shorter than small intestine, no villi/ digestive glands
no goblet cells
What is the role of goblet cells?
secrete mucous
What are the 4 parts of the large intestine?
caecum, colon, rectum, anal sphincter
Caecum-
joins ileum at ileocaecal junction
Colon-
water, vitamins, electrolytes absorbed
Rectum-
through pelvic cavity- held by connective tissue
Anal Sphincter-
made up of internal/ external anal sphincter
Internal Sphincter control?
involuntary- smooth muscle
External Sphincter control?
voluntary- striated muscle
How are products of digestion taken to the liver?
hepatic portal vein
Portosystemic shunt-
when HP vein bypasses liver
What are some functions of the liver?
regulation of amino acids, production of urea/ new proteins
destruction of RBCs and formation of new ones
What are all proteins made up of?
amino acids
What liver functions are via the hepatic portal vein?
carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism- macronutrients
What slows down peristalsis?
opioids
