Eye.1 Flashcards
What are receptor cells?
highly specialised to detect a particular form of energy
each sense organ has own receptor cell
What are photoreceptor cells?
adapted to respond to light stimulus, found in inner part of retina
What field of vision does a predator species have?
3D, binocular- wider area to scan
What field of vision does a prey species have?
2D, monocular- side of head, smaller area to scan
What are the three main parts of the eye?
the eyeball
extrinsic muscles
eyelids
How does the bony orbit provide protection?
provides a hard protective cavity
How does the conjunctiva provide protection?
thin layer of epithelial tissue, overlaying cornea and inside of eyelid
How does the upper and lower eyelids (palpebra) provide protection?
joined at medial and lateral canthi (pl)- corners of eye- touching the eye/ reflex, unconscious response
—- protect eye from mechanical damage by closing
How does the eyelashes provide protection?
aiding in sensory detection
How does the lacrimal gland provide protection?
lies dorsoventral surface of eye, secretes tears- washing surface. Tears drain into the nasolacrimal duct
How does the meibomian glands provide protection?
diffuse tissue lying under eyelids, contributes to tears
How does the harderian or nicitans Gland provide protection?
lies underneath third eyelid- contributes to secretion of tears
What are the 3 internal eye component parts?
anterior chambers- front portion
posterior chambers- between iris and lens
vitreous body
What is the viterous body?
caudal to lens, filled with clear gelantinous material- keeps eye in shape
