Eye (Key Terms) Flashcards
Define Conjunctiva
Thin layer of epithelial tissues, overlaying cornea and inside of eye lid
Define Binocular vision
3D vision- larger field of view (predator eyes)
Define Cilia
Eyelashes- protects eye, sensory detection
Define Canthi
Corner of the eye where upper and lower eyelids meet
Define Lacrimal, Harderian & Meibomian glands
Lacrimal: lies dorsoventral surface of eye- secretes tears, washing surface, tears drain into nasolacrimal duct
Meibomian: diffuse tissue lying under eyelids, contributes to tears
Harderian: lies under third eyelid, contributes to secretion of tears
Define Nasolacrimal duct
Tube that carries tears from eye to nose
Define Aqueous humour
Fluid Provides nutrition to corneal cells- glucose/ oxygen- filling anterior and posterior chamber
Define Vitreous humour
Gelatinous material, keeps the shape- fills the vitreous body
Define Sclera
Tough fibrous outer layer ‘white of the eye’
Extrinsic muscles insert
Limbus- junction between sclera and cornea
Define Retina
senses light, sending signals to brain- most inner part of eye
Define Ciliary Body
Contains smooth muscle fibers, contracts to control shape and thickness- involuntary
bends/ refracts light
Define Iris
Pigmented, muscles contract or relax- changes size of pupil
mydriasis- bigger pupils
miosis- smaller pupils
Define Tapetum Lucidum
Projects extra light onto retina, improves vision when dark
Define Nictitating membrane
Protects cornea, sweeping across surface- distribute tears and remove debris
