Ear.1 Flashcards
What are the functions of the ear?
hearing and balance
dorsal part- head
What are special receptor cells adapted to?
sound waves, movement of the body- inner ear
What is cerumen?
ear wax
What is the function of ceruminous glands?
modified sebaceous glands, secrete wax, protect ear canal from damage
What is the external auditory meatus?
dorsoventrally- vertical
changes to horizontal
– ends at TP membrane (ear drum)
What is otitis externa?
infection of external ear canal- bacteria/ fungi
aural haematoma
What are the 3 parts of the middle ear?
tympanic cavity
tympanic membrane
auditory ossicles
What is the tympanic cavity lined with?
ciliated columnar epithelial mucosa- filled with air
What is the Eustachian Tube?
opening of TP cavity- connects to nasopharynx to middle of ear
equalises air pressure- middle ear
What is the bone around the TP cavity?
tympanic bulla
What is the function of the tympanic cavity?
boundary between external and middle ear- thin transparent membrane
What do the sound waves cause the membrane to do?
vibrate- passed onto auditory ossicles
What is the Auditory Ossicles?
small bones- forms flexible chain- transmits vibrations from middle to inner ear
What bones are linked by the synovial joint?
malleus (hammer)
Incus (anvil)
Stapes (stirrup)
