Structure of the Brain & Different Brain Areas Flashcards
What four lobes make up the brain?
Temporal lobe
Parietal lobe
Occipital lobe
Frontal lobe
What is the frontal lobe linked to?
Linked to planning and implementing movement
What connections does the prefrontal cortex have with parts of the brain?
Lot of connections with parts of the brain relating to dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline which relate to emotions
What is the prefrontal cortex associated with?
Associated with deferred gratification and decision making
What is the prefrontal cortex in the right hemisphere involved with?
Seems to be involved with negative emotions
What is the prefrontal cortex in the left hemisphere involved with?
Involved with positive emotions
What is the parietal lobe linked to?
Linked to sensations e.g. touch, pain etc.
What is the temporal lobe involved with?
Involved in processing and interpreting sounds
What does the temporal lobe contain? What does this process?
Contains the hippocampus which processes memory formation
What is the corpus callosum?
The section that joins the left and right hemisphere
What is the corpus callosum involved with?
Involved with regulation and control of behaviour but is also linked to understanding the long term implications of a situation
What does the limbic system include?
Included the amygdala and hypothalamus
What does the amygdala do?
Is the centre for identifying threat and its role is self-preservation
What does the amygdala have a role in?
Has a role in arousal, aggression and the ‘fight or flight’ response
What does the hypothalamus regulate?
Regulates behaviours such as pain, anger and aggression
It also regulates our autonomic nervous system including blood pressure and arousal levels
