What does ethics refer to?
Values and beliefs and what is right and wrong when working with people in society.
What are the four ethical principals?
Respect, competence, responsibility and integrity
What does respect refer to?
Respecting the dignity of participants
What does privacy refer to?
Observational research should only take place in a public place
What does confidentiality refer to?
Participant data must be kept anonymous unless full consent is given
What does informed consent refer to?
Participants should be told nature, purpose and anticipated consequences of any research participation.
Informed consent should be given at the beginning of the research.
What does withdrawal refer to?
Participants have the right to withdraw from the investigation at any time and can demand own data be destroyed.
What does competence refer to?
All research carried out should be within the researchers ability and should seek help from more experienced colleagues if necessary
What does responsibility refer to?
Researcher should be responsible for the participant and do no harm to them
What does protection refer to?
Researcher must cause no physical or psychological harm to participants.
Participants should leave in the same state they entered.
What does debriefing refer to?
Results of the study should be shared with participants.
All participants given the right to withdraw their data.
Researcher seeks feedback concerning participant experience throughout.
Allows the researcher to ensure all participants leave in the same emotional state when they entered.
What does integrity refer to?
Researcher must maintain professional boundaries.
What does deception refer to?
Deceiving participants should be avoided when possible.
Intentional deception e.g. lying must be avoided when possible unless deception is neccessary in exceptional circumstances to preserve integrity of research.
