What is a self report?
Any data collection method that involves asking people to report their thoughts, feelings or behaviour
What is a questionnaire?
Respondents record their own answers to pre-determined questions
Can be administered face to face, by post or online
What is an interview?
Researcher asks the respondent the questions directly and records their response personally
Can be carried out face to face or telephone
What is a pilot study?
A mini version of a full-scale study
Practice run carried out on a small group of respondents
Aims to test the clarity and wording of questions and to ensure that the required information will be gathered
What is a closed question?
Fixed number of answers
Tends to provide quantitative data
What is an open question?
Respondents provide their own answers
Tends to provide qualitative data
What are examples of closed questions?
Rating scale items
Identifying characteristics
Likert type/rank scale items
What is a structured interview?
Involves closed and predetermined questions so that a respondent has no options and does not lead the direction of the interview
What is a semi-structured interview?
Some fixed questions and some structured regarding what will be asked
There is room for respondents to lead the direction of the interview
A combination of both closed and open questions
Will produced both quantitative and qualitative data
What is an unstructured interview?
Open for respondents to lead the questions and the course of the interview
Questions asked would be purely open ended
Researchers can ask further questions arising from the respondents answers
