Questionnaires & Interviews Flashcards
What is self report data?
Any method where we are asking participants for their opinions
What is a questionnaire?
Done remotely, respondent doesn’t have to be with the researcher, written format
What is a pilot study?
Trial questions with a smaller group of people, are they getting the responses they wanted?
What is a closed question?
Producing quantitative data, limited information from participants
e.g. Likert scale (strength of opinion - strongly agree, strongly disagree)
What is an open question?
Producing qualitative data
What are general strengths of questionnaires?
High validity
Qualitative data easier to analyse/make comparisons
Structured questionnaires easy to replicate
Open questions provide in-depth data
What are the general weaknesses of questionnaires?
Social desirability
Subjectivity
Response data
Closed questions don’t provide reasons behind the responses
What is a structured interview?
Set questions you ask every participant
What is a semi-structured interview?
Some predetermined questions, can follow up anything, open and closed questions as well
What is an unstructured interview?
No set questions just a topic, think of questions as you go along
What are the general strengths of interviews?
Questions can be explained and explored so likely to be more valid and give ‘true data’ (unstructured)
Quantitative data from structured interviews easier to analyse/make comparisons
Structured interviews easy to replicate
What are the general weaknesses of interviews?
Conducted at different times by different people in different settings therefore difficult to replicate exactly and test for reliability
Open to bias in analysis as generating themes requires interpretation; open to subjectivity
Interviewer bias may occur where the interviewer may influence the responses provided by the interviewee
