Bandura, Ross & Ross (1963) - Imitation of Film Mediated Models Flashcards
What was the aim of Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
To investigate whether:
- a filmed model would have the same effect as a live model on children’s aggression
- cartoon aggression would have a similar impact to realistic film aggression
What was the research and method design of Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
Lab experiment using an independent groups design
What was the IV and DV of Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
IV - the model (whether live, filmed or cartoon)
DV - the level of aggression the children displayed
What was the sample like of Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
96 children (48 boys and 48 girls) aged 39-52 months were selected from Stanford University nursery
Matched on pre-existing levels of aggression
What were the 4 conditions in Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
Live aggression condition - watched an adult aggress towards a bobo doll
Filmed realistic aggression condition - watched the same aggressive role model aggress towards a bobo doll film on a screen
Cartoon aggressive condition - a model dressed as a black cartoon cat perform the same aggressive behaviour towards a bobo doll shown on a normal TV while the children were playing
Control condition - children didn’t watch aggression at all
What was stage 2 of Bandura imitation of film mediated models like?
children were exposed to mild aggression arousal before being taken to a different room where they were left to play with a range of toys
What was stage 3 of Bandura imitation of film mediated models like?
children’s behaviour was observed (number of verbal, physical, mallet and gun play aggressive actions child carried out)
every 5 seconds for 20 minutes (240 responses per child)
What were the results of Bandura imitation of film mediated models for each condition?
Live aggression - 83
Filmed realisitic aggression - 92
Cartoon aggression - 99
Control group - 54
What were the overall results of Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
In all 3 experimental conditions the children displayed significantly higher aggression compared to control group
Watching a human (real life/film) or cartoon character made no significant difference in number of aggressive behaviours displayed
- did differ significantly from control condition
What conclusions were made of Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
Exposure to live or filmed aggression increases likelihood of aggression in response to frustration, even if aggression is modelled by a cartoon character
Bandura expected there to be less imitation of cartoon role model because the children would identify with it less
- cartoon aggression seemed to weaken social inhibitions generally - less imitative aggression, more imitative aggression in this condition
What are the strengths of Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
Reliability
Scientific credibility
Practical applications
What are the weaknesses of Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
Low ecological validity
Generalisability
Why is reliability a strength of Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
Tested intter-rater reliability so this means the results are thought to be reliable
Why is scientific credibility a strength of Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
Varibales were well controlled so only IV changed in each case
Results scientifically credible and demonstrate cause and effect
Why is practical applications a strength of Bandura imitation of film mediated models?
Results have practical applications from Bandura et al - claim their results show that violence on TV is likely to be modelled by those watching
