What is the HCPC?
Regulatory body set up by the government to ensure high standards amongst people who work in health-related professions
Why do you register with the HCPC?
Have to register in order to practice as a professional in any health-related job
e.g. art therapist
consumer psychologists
counsellor
forensic or criminal psychologist
What is the three step process of HCPC?
Achieve the standards of education
Application for registration
Adherence of HCPC standards
What does stage 1 of HCPC involve?
HCPC checks that the individual has passed all elements of programmes needed to do that job
e.g. clinical psychologist needs a psychology degree and doctorate qualification
What does stage 2 of HCPC involve?
Character reference - from somebody with professional standing in the community who has known you for at least 3 years
Health check - physical and mental
DBS check - criminal convictions or cautions
What does proficiency refer to in stage 3 of HCPC?
Refers to the professional having high levels of skills and expertise when dealing with service users
What are HCPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics?
Manage the risks encountered by themselves, their clients and their colleagues
Must keep detailed record for all interactions with your patients after each interaction - keep records private
What are 3 of HCPC’s ethics?
Confidentiality - must not discuss details of patient cases where others can hear, leave notes where people can access them
Competence - professional must make sure they feel qualified to deal with issues, if not refer to another agency
Collegiality - if we are aware that our colleague aren’t following the standards/code of conduct we have a duty to report them
What are HCPC’s standards of continuing professional development?
CPD - yearly training
