Model that suggests people may have a predisposition to a certain illness and then types of environmental stress can trigger illness in someone who already has a predisposition
Diathesis-stress model
Type of stressor where an enormous event occurs that is completely out of control of the individual e.g. natural disaster, war
Crisis/catastrophe
Type of stressor which may or may not be in an individual’s control and which can be expected a number of times over the course of someone’s life e.g. death of a loved one, birth of a child, divorce
Major life event
Type of stressor which happens on a regular basis in someone’s life e.g. work deadline, difficult interaction with a family member
Microstressor/daily hassle
Type of stress involving low grade background issues e.g. traffic, loud noise
Ambient stressor
Idea that individuals have levels of stress they are able to tolerate due to their own personalities or situations, and if their stress level moves beyond their own personal tolerance they move from ‘well’ to ‘ill’

Model developed by Lazarus outlining people’s method of coping with stressors
Cognitive-mediation model
Stage in the cognitive-mediation model of coping with stress where the stressor is evaluated
Primary appraisal
Stage in the cognitive-mediation model of coping with stress where the person’s resources and options for how to cope with the stressor are evaluated
Secondary appraisal
Stage in the cognitive-mediation model of coping with stress where the person chooses and uses a strategy to cope with the stressor
Coping stage
Type of coping strategy where the individual attempts to change the stressor
Problem-focused coping
Type of coping mechanism where the person attempts to change their own emotional reaction to the stressor
