Three component model of attitude consists of
Affective, behavioural, cognitive
Component of attitude which consists of what someone feels about an object

Component of attitude which consists of the actual or intended response to an object

Four functions of attitude consist of
Knowledge, value expressive/ego-expressive, social adjustment/adaptive, ego-defensive
Function of attitude which acts as a frame of reference and allows quick appraisals and predictions of situations
Knowledge function
Function of attitude which allows people to communicate who they are and assert identity (e.g. car bumper stickers, veganism)
Self expressive/ego expressive
Function of attitude which helps people manage in group settings. Also covers seeking out others with similar attitudes and changing attitude to be like those they look up to.
Social adjustment/adaptive
Function of attitude that protects someone’s self esteem and allows them to justify actions that make them feel guilty

Situation involving conflicting beliefs and attitudes which leads to a change in one of the beliefs or attitudes
Cognitive dissonance
Method of measuring attitude towards a target subject where statements are presented and should be agreed or disagreed with. Prior to using the scale the statements have been ranked on a scale of 1-11 by a large number of people in terms of how favourable that statement is towards the target subject.
Thurstone scale
Scale to measure attitude where someone rates measures on a scale from strongly agree to strongly disagree
Likert scale
Scale to measure attitude which includes a hierarchical list of statements that someone chooses to agree or disagree with
Guttman scale
