Acculturation

Berry
Type of acculturation described by Berry where there is a partial adaptation of a new culture without any retention of the origin culture
Assimilation
Type of acculturation described by Berry where there is both adoption of the new culture and retention of the old culture
Integration
Type of acculturation described by Berry where there is low adoption of the new culture and high retention of the old culture
Separation
Type of acculturation described by Berry where there is low retention of the origin culture but also low adoption of the new culture
Marginalisation
The idea that culture is learnt through contact with family, friends, teachers and the media
Enculturation
The concept used to describe multiculturalism that takes place naturally, without formal planning
Laissez-faire
Type of cultural assimilation where a new dominant culture is formed from aspects of the involved origin cultures - often used to describe the USA
Melting pot
Term for the spread of cultural traits from person to person across societies
Cultural diffusion or syncretism
The voluntary but brief exposure to another culture

Age group that find it the most difficult to adapt when a family emigrates
