What is Spontaneous Bacterial peritonitis?
Form of peritonitis caused by an infection of ascitic fluid in the peritoneal cavity
Who is SBP usually seen in?
Patients with ascites secondary to liver cirrhosis.
What are the main features of SBP?
ascites
abdominal pain
fever
How is SBP usually diagnosed?
Paracentesis
What is found in a paracentesis that would indicate SBP?
Neutrophil count > 250 cells/ul
What organism commonly causes SBP?
E.coli
What is the management of SBP?
IV cefotaxime
When would you give antibiotic prophylaxis for someone with SBP?
If the person has had a
-a previous episode of SBP
-cirrhosis and ascites
What is a marker of poor prognosis in someone with SBP?
Alcoholic liver disease
What are patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis at risk of?
Renal impairment
What can be prescribed to reduce the risk of renal impairment?
Human albumin solution
