E.coli
What is the most common precipitating factor of asending cholangitis?
Gallstones
What are the main symptoms of ascending cholangitis?
Charcot’s triad
What does charcot’s triad include?
RUQ pain
Fever
Jaundice
What other symptoms can occur with acute cholangitis?
Hypotension
Tachycardia
Confusion
If sepsis
What would you find in the blood of someone with acute cholangitis?
Raised LFTs
Raised inflammatory markers (WCCs and CRP).
What is the first line imaging used for ascending cholangitis?
Ultrasound
What is the function of US in someone with ascending cholangitis?
To visulaise bile duct dilation and bile duct stones
What is used in the management of ascending cholangitis?
IV antibiotics
Fluid resuscitation (if septic)
ERCP
When might you carry out ERCP in someone with acute cholangitis?
24-48 hours after to relieve any obstruction
What are the other possible causes of ascending cholangitis?
Benign biliary strictures
Malignancy
Which LTF’s will be raised in acute cholangitis?
Raised bilirubin
