Functional bowel disorder
What happens in IBS?
Abnormal functioning of an otherwise healthy bowel
Who is most commonly affected by IBS?
Young women

How does IBS present?
A-Abdominal Pain B-Bloating C-Constipation then Diarrhoea (Fluctuating) D- Defaecation improves symptoms E- Eating makes it worse F-Faeces contains mucus
How is IBS diagnosed?
Exclude other pathology
How would you exclude IBD?
Faecal calprotectin
How would you exclude coeliac?
Negative anti-TTG antibodies
What would need to be normal to diagnose IBS?
FBC
ESR
CRP
Blood tests
How often do symptoms need to be present fot the diagnosis of IBS?
3x a month for more than 3 months
What are lifestyle managements of IBS?
Regular small meals
Limit caffeine and alcohol
Low FODMAP diet
Probiotic supplements
What is the first line management of IBS?
Loperamide after each loose stool
What is the second line management of IBS?
Tricyclic antidepressants- Amitriptyline
What can also be used in the management of IBS?
CBT
Oral antispasmodics
