Q

Dimensions of Spiritual Warfare

A
The world (culture)
The flesh (evil desires)
The devil (Spiritual forces)

Ephesians 1

  1. And you [hath he quickened], who were dead in trespasses and sins;

[the world]

  1. Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world,

[The devil]

according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

[The flesh]

  1. Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. {desires: Gr. wills}

Q

Spiritual Warfare

A

Warfare between the kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Darkness.

It is bringing the power, perspective, and passion of the truth and life of the gospel against everything that sets itself against the truth of God.

2 Cor 10 3-5

3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

4 (For the weapons of our warfare [are] not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds;) {through God: or, to God}

5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; {imaginations: or, reasonings}

How does the world call the works of the flesh good?

A

Galatians 4:19 -21

sexual immorality = freedom to express yourself

Galations 4

A

Galatians 4:

16 But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, for these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, depravity, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, murder, drunkenness, carousing, and similar things. I am warning you, as I had warned you before: Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God!

Q

How did Jesus deal with demons

A

a single command “get out”

Jesus did not perform an elaborate ritual, or ask for a hierarchy, or ask for their commander’s name.

He did not use the demon’s name to expel it. The only time Jesus asked for a name, was to demonstrate the severity of the situation that the demoniac was in. He did not use the demon’s name to expel it, and the only reason he permitted the demons to go into the pigs was to illustrate the nature of the demons.

Jesus also never told demons where to go. He did not tell them to go to the pit or anywhere else.

Jesus did not ask the demon what legal right(sin) he has to possess the person.

evidence of people casting out demons beyond Pentecost

Phillip (not an apostle, not one of the 12 or 72, not with Jesus) casts out demons

Q

Are demons real?

A

Yes

throne, dominions, principalities, powers

Colossians 1:15

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation,

16 for all things in heaven and on earth were created in him—all things, whether visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions, whether principalities or powers—all things were created through him and for him.

Ephesians 6

11 Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.

Q

Gospel encounter

A
  • Demonic spirit and Holy spirit cannot inhabit the same body
  • If someone is a believer, they have the holy spirit, therefore demonic spirit can’t be inside me
  • No conclusive evidence that anyone possessed in the bible was a believer
  • No possessed Christians in the new testament
  • No instructions on exorcism in the bible
  • Never is the command for a believer to deal with demons by casting them out, but only to stand and resist, meaning that they are dealing with an external temptation.
  • Demons can tempt but not control

2 Corinthians 6:14-16

14 Do not become partners with those who do not believe, for what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship does light have with darkness? 15 And what agreement does Christ have with Beliar? Or what does a believer share in common with an unbeliever? 16 And what mutual agreement does the temple of God have with idols? For we are the temple of the living God, just as God said, “I will live in them and will walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

The problem with this view is that Paul is saying “don’t be yoked with unbelievers” not “you can’t be yoked”. He is warning them exactly because it is possible. And nowhere in the verse does it say that a demon can’t influence or possess a believer.

In Job and in Zacharia, we find Satan himself in Heaven before God.

Q

Power Encounter

A
  • Christians can be demonized and controlled, but not completely possessed
  • Legal right is given through unconfessed sin
  • Legal right is revoked by confessing sin
  • Deal with the hierarchy of demons
  • 3 kinds of sin: personal, generational sin, spiritual sin

Ephesians 4: 25-27

25 Therefore, having laid aside falsehood, each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor because we are members of one another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on the cause of your anger. 27 Do not give the devil an opportunity [foothold].

generational curses

exodus 20

4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me, 6 and showing covenant faithfulness to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

The problem with this view is that it does not say that sin gives legal rights for demons, just that sin gives satan room to maneuver. Also, a lot of the information that informs this view comes from people involved in deliverance asking the demons themselves.

Another problem is that it does not conform to the model given to us by Christ. Christ did not ask for hierarchies, or for the name of the commander. Christ simply just said, “shut up, get out”. Christ did not expel demons by a method, but rather by the power of the spirit.

Q

Truth encounter

A
  • Two kingdoms, light and darkness
  • Anyone in the kingdom of darkness is under the authority of satan.
  • Once in the kingdom of light, satan has no more power and authority over us but still attempts to tempt us
  • we have the power to resist
  • Satan can still exercise influence and control in our lives if we believe the lies of demons, even to the point where we can be dominated by a demon, but they don’t have any legitimate authority

two kingdoms

Colossians 1

12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the saints’ inheritance in the light. 13 He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

3 “You shall have no other gods before[a] me.

Who are the other gods that one can have before God?

exodus 15:11

11 Who among the gods
    is like you, Lord?

    working wonders?

Who are the other gods that are unlike God?

exodus 23:32

Who are the other gods that you can make a covenant with?

Deuteronomy 12:2
2 Destroy completely all the places on the high mountains, on the hills, and under every spreading tree, where the nations you are dispossessing worship their gods. 3 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and burn their Asherah poles in the fire; cut down the idols of their gods and wipe out their names from those places.

Who are the gods that are differentiated from the idols that represent them?

judges 11:23

23 “Now since the Lord, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out before his people Israel, what right have you to take it over? 24 Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the Lord our God has given us, we will possess. 25

Who is the gods that can give things?

1 Kings 11

5 He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites. 6 So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done.

Who are these Gods that have names?

Daniel 10

A messenger angel tells Daniel that he is battling and was delayed by the Prince of Persia and that Micheal “one of the chief princes” came to deliver him from the Prince of Persia. And once he has defeated the prince of Persia, then the prince of greece will come. The princes referred to here are the princes of the kingdom of darkness, and are the gods behind the idols of the cultures.

Rev 12

7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

Q

Why is it that specific entities or “gods” are associated with specific nations, cultures or ethnicities?

A

The below verse is a reference to the tower of babel (Gen 11) when God divided the nations and gave them over to their gods [heavenly princes, angels] for their persistent sin. Before this time there was only one language and one culture, but after this event, God divided the nations according to the number of heavenly princes or angels and delivered the nations over to their “gods” or angels. This is why the book of Daniel talks about the “Prince of Persia” and the “Prince of Greece” as these are angels [Demons] that rule over those nations.

Deuteronomy 32

  1. Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past. Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders, and they will explain to you.

8 When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance when he divided all mankind,
he set up boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the sons of God [heavenly princes]

9 For the Lord’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance.

Q

Are the “sons of god”, Princes, Angelic beings, or gods mentioned in the bible the same as the demons or evil spirits of the Bible?

A

Deut 32:16-18

16 They made him jealous with their foreign gods and angered him with their detestable idols.
17 They sacrificed to demons [false gods], which are not God—
gods they had not known,
gods that recently appeared,
gods your ancestors did not fear.
18 You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.

There is some evidence to suggest that they are, although scripture is not absolutely clear on this, and some scholars disagree.

Q

What does 3 deliverance models agree on

A
  1. Demons are real
  2. Demons are personal: MInd, will, emotions
  3. Satan is the Prince of Darkness, He has many names
  4. Satan is not equal to Jesus or God
  5. Satan is an angelic being or fallen angel.
26
Q

How de we know that demons are personal and have mind, will, an emotions?

A

Mark 1:23 - 26

23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.

demons have:

Knowledge: The demons (plural) had knowledge that Jesus was the Son of God

Will: They don’t want to be destroyed, They wanted to expose Christ for who he was.

Emotions: They are afraid of Jesus, and the shrieked

Q

Who was the angel of the lord in Zechariah 3?

A

The pre-incarnate Christ. (Melek Yahweh)

29
Q

Who lucifer mentioned in the Isaiah 14:12 of the KJV?

A

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning ! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! {O Lucifer: or, O day star}

This was a mistranslation or non-translation from the Latin Vulgate. The word lucifer is not a proper name, but a Latin word that refers to the planet, Venus.

Isaiah was using venus as a metaphor to depict the king of Babylon, as the metaphor was commonly used in ancient times to refer to earthly kings, and sometimes pagan deities. Which very well could have been used to refer to both an earthly king and its heavenly counterpart or deity.

Some scholars believe that it is a reference to Satan, as
the metaphor as used in the passage parallels Satans arrogance and pride in that it talks about the king setting itself above God or trying to be like God, but other scholars don’t believe that it references Satan, but rather an Angelic prince ruling over Babylon, similar to the prince of Persia and the prince of Greece mentioned in the book of Daniel because Satan was not assigned to Babylon. The presiding or chief deity of Babylon was Marduk.

The same or similar references are found in Ezekial 28, where the prophet Ezekial prophesizes the destruction of Tyre. Some scholars believe that the King of Tyre was Satan because the passage talks about Tyre trying to be like God and once again parallels Satans arrogance, but other Scholars argue that Satan was not assigned to Tyre and that instead, it is a fallen angelic being that ruled over Tyre.

In the same way that the metaphor of venus used by Isaia references the earthly and the heavenly, Ezekial distinguishes between the prince of Tyre and the King of Tyre. What is clear from the text is that the prince of Tyre is a human ruler, whereas the King of Tyre is an Angelic being, that was present in the Garden of Eden, also the chief deity or god of Tyre was Melqart, which means “King of Tyre”, also called Baal de sor which means “lord of Tyre”.

The same concept of divine rulership, of an earthly king being the earthly representative of a divine being in the heavenly, can still be seen today in the Devaraja cults of South East Asia, namely Cambodia and Thailand, where the King is the earthly representative of Vishnu

30
Q

Disagreements between the three models of deliverance?

A

Can demons tempt believers?
Gospel: Yes
Power: Yes
Truth: Yes

Can demons accuse believers (make us feel condemned, stupid, unworthy)?
Gospel: Yes
Power: yes
Truth: Yes

Can believers fall prey to temptation?
Gospel:
Power:
Truth:

Do believers have the authority to command demons to leave unbelievers?
Gospel: No, we should never speak to a demon, because only Jesus and the apostles can do that. But this view is contradicted by Acts 8, where Phillip, neither Jesus nor an Apostle casts out a demon
Power: Yes
Truth: Yes

31
Q

Why could the disciples not drive the demon out of the boy?

A

Mark 9

This was not the 12 disciples, it was a bigger group of disciples

In the KJV Jesus said: “This kind can only come out by prayer and fasting”

Textual criticism shows that the phrase “and fasting” possibly was added as a liturgical addition, to the Latin translation in the 5th century, when the church became more pagan and turned fasting into something that is required for spiritual authority.

In the parallel passage in Mathew 17:20, Jesus answers “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.[d]”

So it was their lack of faith in Jesus. Note here that by saying “as small as a mustard seed” Jesus is not saying that the effectiveness of exorcism is proportionate to the size or strength of one’s faith, for even a little bit of faith would do. So then it is not “by faith” but by “faith in” Christ, that these things are possible, even just a little bit of faith. Like that boy’s father who said “I believe, but help my unbelieve”.

Some scholars believe that these disciples were trying to cast out the demon through the use of formulaic ritual. Which would mean that they were putting their faith in a ritual, instead of Christ. Which is why Jesus told them that it was their lack of ‘faith’

32
Q

Where do occult abillities come from?

A

The girl with psychism, who could tell the future, had a demonic spirit.

Acts 16:16

16 One day as we were going down to the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit that enabled her to tell the future. She earned a lot of money for her masters by telling fortunes.

After the spririt is cast out, she was no longer able to tell the future, which angered her masters

Acts 16:19

19 Her masters’ hopes of wealth were now shattered, so they grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities at the marketplace.

33
Q

What is Satan’s agenda?

A

To kill, steal and destroy

John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

34
Q

What is the world view of Mormonism?

A

Jesus and Satan are brothers. Which are false. Jesus is God, and Satan is a created angelic being.

35
Q

Can believers be taken captive by the kingdom of darkness?

A

In Col 2, Paul tells us that Christians can be taken captive through deception when they become forgetful of their identity in Christ.

Col 2:

6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world rather than on Christ.

9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. 11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh[b] was put off when you were circumcised by[c] Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[d] alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.[e]

36
Q

Can believers be taken captive by the kingdom of darkness?

A

Yes, believers can be lured into deception and compromise with spiritual powers, and come into alliance with demons.

2 Timothy 2

24And the Lord’s slave[aq] must not engage in heated disputes[ar] but be kind toward all, an apt teacher, patient, 25 correcting[as] opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truth[at] 26 and they will come to their senses and escape the devil’s trap where they are held captive[au] to do his will.[av]

37
Q

What are the 7 things God has done for us on the cross, and what does that mean for us.

A

Colossians 2:13

  1. Made us alive in Christ
  2. He forgave us ALL our sins (past, present, future, confessed, unconfessed).
  3. Canceled our debts
  4. Canceled the very principle of law that condemned us, by nailing it to the cross. (We now live by the law of grace)
  5. Disarmed the demonic powers and authorities (Demons no longer have authority over believers)
  6. He made a public spectacle of the demonic
  7. He triumphed over them by the cross.

Therefore let no one judge or disqualify you.

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you.

38
Q

The fundamental war for believers is…?

A

Becoming forgetful of who we are in Christ
Overate Demons
Underate Christ
Underate our authority

2 Cor 11:

3 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

2 Cor 4:3

3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.
4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5

2 Timothy

4 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. 3

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Paul quotes the old testaments and develops it from …

The armor pieces is the characteristics of Christ

In order to stand we need to stand firm in our identity in Christ

The putting on the armor is the becoming a disciple of Christ through sanctification.

Q

Should we pray against Satan

A

Ephesians 6

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Paul is not using prayer here to pray against Satan, but simply to pray for others and pray for strength that he may be strengthened.

What is directed against Satan is rebuke, not prayer. Prayer is always directed towards God.

Q

How to respond to demons

A
  1. Stand in your faith and authority in Christ
  2. Pray to God for wisdom and guidance
  3. Simple commands “be quiet”, “get out”, “get away from me”
  4. Quote scripture

Never
1. Debate or argue with demons (Jesus didn’t argue, Micheal did not bring an argument against the devil)

42
Q

Jesus cast out demons with the command “Get out”, but what command does he use with believers?

A

“get away from me Satan” -temptation in the dessert
“get behind me Satan” - peter

The greek phrase for “get behind me satan” is actually “get away from me, to the back”

This seems to suggest that the demons are not inside the person, but outside influencing the person.

43
Q

Demons are persistent, in most cases, they return to the person they have been cast out of. What to do?

A

The demon returning with 7 others

Jesus tempted in the dessert
Satan returns and attempts to temp christ again through peter.

44
Q

how does Satan use our sin?

A

Not to possess us, as it does not give demons legal ground.

But Satan uses our sin (desires of the flesh) to lure and seduce us. ()

Satan exploits and takes advantage of sin in our life. Sin gives Satan room to work in our life.(Don not let the son go down on your anger)

Satan energizes our sinful nature.(peter)

Satan uses sin to take us captive through the confusion in order to do his will.

2 Timothy 2
And the Lord’s slave[aq] must not engage in heated disputes[ar] but be kind toward all, an apt teacher, patient, 25 correcting[as] opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truth[at] 26 and they will come to their senses and escape the devil’s trap where they are held captive[au] to do his will.[av]

46
Q

Examples of Satan influencing believers

A

Peter

Ananias and Sapphira

Acts 5
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled[c] your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back for yourself part of the proceeds from the sale of[d] the land?

47
Q

What does it mean to resist the devil? And How to do it?

A

The word resist is not passive, it means to actively oppose or rebel.

Do:

  • humble ourselves before God.
  • Cast your anxiety on God.
  • be self-controlled
  • vigilant: watch for satans schemes
  • oppose and push
  • standing firmly on the truth

Don’t

  • be arrogant and proud
  • be filled with fear, worry, and anxiety, or deny it
  • act impulsively without thinking.
  • be careless.
  • be submissive to the devil.
  • compromise on the truth.
48
Q

Can a demon have a legal right in Christian life?

A

No, demons do not have the legal right, we do not have to satisfy their legalities. It doesn’t work that way in the kingdom of light.

They try to deceive us into thinking that they do, so that if we believe their deception they will

49
Q

What happens when an unbeliever does not want the demon to leave?

A

You end up in a struggle or a tug of war or a war of wills. And many times the demon won’t leave.

but if the unbeliever is cooperative and wants to be free, then he will be free, however, it is better to first get them to accept Christ their Lord and savior.

50
Q

What to do with believers who are struggling with domination.

A
  1. Help them realize their authority
  2. Understand the kingdom of Christ or light (no legal right, no authority, etc)
    3.
51
Q

Principles of deliverance.

A
  1. Salvation: Affirm their standing
  2. Authority: Help them understand their authority
  3. Kingdom: Help them understand the kingdom of light
52
Q

3 basic tactics of satan

A

Deception
Accusation
Temptation

53
Q

Most effective forms of a lie

A

3rd most effective form of a lie: Tell them what they want to hear

2nd most effective form of a lie: Half-truth

1st most effective form of a lie: Tell them the whole truth, but unconvincingly

Controversial passages: JUDE

A

Jude 1

9 But even[aq] when Michael the archangel[ar] was arguing with the devil and debating with him[as] concerning Moses’ body, he did not dare to bring a slanderous judgment, but said, “May the Lord rebuke you!”

The Gospel encounter uses this passage to support their claim that one should NEVER speak to demons, however in this passage Micheal clearly speaks to satan.

This passage does not say you cannot speak to a demon or rebuke a demon.

Q

Controversial passages: GENESIS CHAPTER 6

A

Gen 6

2 the sons of God[d] saw that the daughters of humankind were beautiful. Thus they took wives for themselves from any they chose. 3 So the Lord said, “My Spirit will not remain in[e] humankind indefinitely,[f] since[g] they[h] are mortal.[i] They[j] will remain for 120 more years.”[k]

4 The Nephilim[l] were on the earth in those days (and also after this)[m] when the sons of God would sleep with[n] the daughters of humankind, who gave birth to their children.[o] They were the mighty heroes[p] of old, the famous men.[q]

Scholars disagree on the interpretation of this text

Fallen angel interpretation:

The Hebrew phrase translated “sons of God” (בְנֵי־הָאֱלֹהִים, vene haʾelohim) occurs only here (Gen 6:2, 4) and in Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7.

There are three major interpretations of the phrase here. (1) In the Book of Job the phrase clearly refers to angelic beings. In Gen 6 the “sons of God” are distinct from “humankind,” suggesting they were not human. This is consistent with the use of the phrase in Job.

Other support includes

The book of Enoch: An early Jewish tradition preserved in 1 En. 6-7 elaborates on this angelic revolt and even names the ringleaders.

Also, both Peter and Jude refers to the sin of the Angels who left their first estate [heavenlies] to marry the daughters of men, which seems to support the account of both Genesis and Enoch

In numbers 13:33 we read:

33 We even saw the Nephilim[a] there (the descendants of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we seemed like grasshoppers both to ourselves[b] and to them.”[c]

This seems to support both the passage in Gen 6:4which says “The Nephilim[l] were on the earth in those days (and also after this)” and the book of Enoch where they are described as giants. As the sons of Anok were in fact Giants (Goliath etc)

One big problem with this view is that Angels are a different class of beings from humans and it seems implausible that they could produce offspring, as God has placed limitations on the cohabitation of everything on earth. (Dogs cannot mate with Cats, etc) Some scholars answer this by saying that since the passage speaks of these beings cohabiting with women, they must have taken physical form or possessed the bodies of men.

The line of Seth interpretation

(2) Not all scholars accept the angelic interpretation of the “sons of God,” however. Some argue that the “sons of God” were members of Seth’s line, traced back to God through Adam in Gen 5, while the “daughters of humankind” were descendants of Cain.

But, as noted above, the text distinguishes the “sons of God” from humankind (which would include the Sethites as well as the Cainites) and suggests that the “daughters of humankind” are human women in general, not just Cainites.

Q

Controversial passages: 1 SAMUEL CHAPTER 16

A

14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had turned away from Saul, and an evil spirit[t] from the Lord tormented him.

The word evil spirit is often misunderstood as a meaning demon, but the Hebrew word can also mean troubled or tortured mind, which would make sense in the context of the rest of the passage which sees David soothing the king’s troubled mind (anger) with music from his harp.

57
Q

Controversial passages: JOB

A

Job 1:

9 Then Satan answered the Lord, “Is it for nothing that Job fears God?[as] 10 Have you[at] not made a hedge[au] around him and his household and all that he has on every side? You have blessed[av] the work of his hands, and his livestock[aw] have increased[ax] in the land. 11 But[ay] extend your hand and strike[az] everything he has, and he will no doubt[ba] curse you[bb] to your face!”

A lot of people pray that God will put a hedge of protection around them, which is fine, but be careful of using this like some kind of magical incantation to summon a field of protection. Beware of turning prayer into magical incantations, using power phrases such as: blood of christ, hedge of protection, I bind you etc.

It is probably better to just pray and ask God to simply protect you.

Q

Controversial passages: MATTHEW CHAPTER 12

A

Matthew 12

A.)

“Every kingdom divided against itself is destroyed,[aj] and no town or house divided against itself will stand. 26 So if[ak] Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?

Some people use this verse to support their claim that demons cannot cast out demons, but Satan will gladly sacrifice a lower-level demon to further his agenda.

Exorcisms or depossession in the occult world are often accomplished in this way. eg.) using the archangel Micheal to cast out demons in the gnostic tradition.

B)

29 How[ap] else can someone enter a strong man’s[aq] house and steal his property, unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can thoroughly plunder the house.[a]

The above passage refers to Satan being bound up during the crucifixion, however, some people use this as a command to “bind up demons” during deliverance, which is obviously not what it refers to.

C)

43 “When[bo] an unclean spirit[bp] goes out of a person,[bq] it passes through waterless places[br] looking for rest but[bs] does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the home I left.’[bt] When it returns,[bu] it finds the house[bv] empty, swept clean, and put in order.[bw] 45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there, so[bx] the last state of that person is worse than the first. It will be that way for this evil generation as well!”

This passage is saying that even if we cast out demons from an unbeliever, but don’t help that person to come to Christ, then we haven’t fundamentally helped them.
